Paalak Amti

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Thought of going Marathi this weekend for a change and tried making some tasty but nutritious recipe. That is how we ended up cooking very tasty palak aamti! How to make it? Eager to know? Let’s not keep you waiting.

Take 2 cups of finely chopped spinach (Palak, available in any sabzi mandi), 1 small finely chopped onion and pressure cook it with 1½ cup of water for 10 minutes. Until then, roast 4-5 red chillies in ½ tsp of oil in a thick bottomed pan and make a smooth paste with ½ cup of grated coconut (optional), by adding water from time to time.

Heat some oil in a kadhai, add ½ tsp of mustard seeds (rai), 8 flakes of crushed garlic and fry till brown. Then add the grounded paste to it and fry for 3-4 minutes. Add the pressure cooked mixture and 1/2 cup of water if needed. Add ¼ cup of tamarind pulp and 1tbsp of jaggery to it. Now add 1½ tsp of corrainder powder, 1½ tsp of jeera powder, ¼ tsp of turmeric powder and salt to taste. If you love groundnuts (like me), add a few just for the sheer fun of it. Simmer for 5 minutes stirring occasionally.

You wont believe it. It took just half an hour to prepare such a wonderful, healthy stuff to eat on a cold rainy evening. We ate it with roasted bread, but you can serve it hot with with rice or chapatti as well.

Did You Know ?

Nepal is the place where Primitive forms of spinach are found and that is probably where the plant was first domesticated.

Other than the Indian Subcontinent, it was unknown to the rest of the world for a long time.

In 647 AD, it was taken to China, possibly by Persians.

It was the Muslim Arabs who took Spinach westwards upto Spain.

Spinach is considered a rich source of iron, calcium, vitamins A (and lutein),B2, B6 C, E, and K.

Popeye the Sailor Man has a strong affinity for spinach, becoming physically stronger after consuming it. This is partially due to the iron content being mistakenly reported ten times the actual value, a value that was rechecked during the 1930s, where it was revealed that the original German scientist, Dr. E. von Wolf, had misplaced a decimal point in his calculations!!!!!!
