Amended Idli

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

We have a friend in our group who is very health conscious. You know how it is. All of us have "grown up" and now our favourite sport seems to be chit chatting and hanging out in restaurants, eateries with friends.

But not her. She is a total fitness freak and any junk food is a strict no for her! When she was home last week with me, I told her that I would prepare idly for the evening. Then she came up with this idea of amended idli. Let me share this recipe with you. It is a very healthy and delicious snack for people of all ages.

Take 2 cups of Bengal gram (Kala or Kabuli Chana)or any other dal of your choice and soak it in water along with 1 tsp cumin seeds and 2- 3 red chillies for 2-3 hours. (Yes, thats the time!)

Later, add 1 cup of finely chopped spinach leaves, 1 1/2 tsp of ginger garlic paste, 1 green chilli and a few curry leaves to this and grind it.

Now grease the idli plates, add 1 tbsp of this mixture to each cup. Place it in the idli cooker for around 12 -15 mins to cook. A very healthy for mof idly is ready to be served.

Eat it with any chutney. You will love it!

Did You Know ?

Chickpeas (Kabuli chana) are high in protein and one of the earliest cultivated vegetables. 7,500-year-old remains have been found in the Middle East.

Domesticated chickpeas have been found in the aceramic levels of Jericho (PPNB) along with Cayönü in Turkey and in Neolithic pottery at Hacilar, Turkey. They are found in the late Neolithic (about 3500 BCE) at Thessaly, Kastanas, Lerna and Dimini.

The originations of Idlis are unclear with the earliest mention in writing occurring in Kannada writing of Shivakotiacharya in 920 AD.

Idlis have been considered one of the top ten most healthiest foods in the world due to the ingredients it is made from.

In the olden days, when the idli mold cooking plates were not popular or widely available, the thick idli batter was poured on a cloth tightly tied on the mouth of a concave deep cooking pan or tava half filled with water. A heavy lid was placed on the pan and the pot kept on the boil until the batter was cooked into idli
